Students at Malone Middle School in Lynn Cady-Poirier's ELA class are gaining recognition after their original rap submission earned a featured shout-out in Flocabulary’s popular Week in Rap video.
Flocabulary, a K–12 learning platform, combines hip-hop with academic content through songs, videos, and interactive activities that help students engage with subjects like current events, vocabulary, and social studies. Each week, its Week in Rap series highlights major news stories in a format that encourages student voice and creativity.
As part of the program, classrooms can participate in the global Week in Rap Shout-Out Contest by submitting original raps or poems inspired by current events. Malone Middle School students Elijah Andre and Calvin McQuinn rose to the challenge, creating a rap, and earned their school recognition in the April 17 episode.
Their original rap captures both creativity and engagement with current events. The lyrics below were written by them in response to events of the week of March 31st and feature references to Finland being ranked the happiest country in the world for the ninth year in a row, and school children in France discovering an ancient skeleton near their school.
Oh yeah, uh hu x2
So some kids,
found a skeleton,
it was very, very old,
It was a huge discovery!
OOh OOh Yeah
Hey guys, it's me
You know those
Finlanders
They're really, really happy
In fact
They're the happiest
That's better than the unhappiest
